Picking up where Tomb Raider: Legend and Tomb Raider: Anniversary left off, Lara travels across the globe—from the icy landscapes of the Arctic to the stunning terrains of Thailand, and even the depths of the Mediterranean Sea. Along the way, Norse mythology and ancient riddles intertwine with Lara’s quest, offering a captivating narrative that blends exploration and mystery.

The gameplay remains true to the series' legacy, with a heavy focus on exploration, puzzle-solving, and acrobatic climbing, with less emphasis on quick-action gunfights. Lara’s skills have evolved, with new moves like wall-jumping inspired by Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, allowing for more dynamic movement. A new sonar map helps guide players through the environments, providing a 3D grid for better orientation, and Lara offers helpful tips if needed.

Unlike previous installments, Tomb Raider: Underworld eliminates quick-time events, giving players full control over Lara’s movements during critical moments. The game’s non-linear level design brings a refreshing change, offering a more open and traditional Tomb Raider experience.
